My mom loves to look at Facebook because she always finds really cute and simple recipes she likes to make with me as part of our mother daughter bonding time. One day we came across a recipe for apple roses, and we decided to make them, just to try them out and see how they tasted. When we were finished, we gave my family a taste for dessert, and my dad and brother really liked them.
One day in class, my teacher said that we had to choose a passion we would like to focus on and take one day a week and practice it to get good at that passion. This kind of project is called the 20Time project, which was started by Google, and it is where employees take one day a week to pursue their passions that normally they wouldn’t have time for. My original plan was to teach American Sign Language to younger kids because that was my passion and what I wanted to pursue in college. But the person I was going to do this project with was not fully committed; therefore, we didn’t exactly have a clear plan of how we were going to move forward. Despite this setback, my dad had told me, “You make the best desserts I have ever tried. You should sell them, and I bet other people would like them too.” I thought he was just telling me this as a compliment because I baked so well, but I ended up doing that as my project for school.
I decided that for my project I would make and sell apple roses. In order for me to be able to sell my apple roses, I had to perfect them, bake them several times, and get suggestions from my family on how I could make them better. After I made the perfect looking apple roses, my first step for starting the process of selling my baked goods was to meet with the bakery owner, give him a sample of my dessert, talk about how much it cost me to make each apple rose, and how much the ingredients cost. I had to learn a lot about negotiating and practice my basic math skills. Since my mom studied how to handle money for big companies, she helped me with how much I should charge the customers for my apple roses, and how much I should sell them for at the local bakery. What I learned about myself through this experience is that I’m really good at perseverance; when one idea didn’t work out, I found another one that did. That says a lot about who I am and who I have always been. When I was younger, doctors told me that I wouldn’t be able to walk for the rest of my life. They sure didn't know I'd be good at entrepreneurship, persistence, and be able to make a great apple rose.
